Pinhole Eye Glasses Frames: Do They Actually Work?

To a lot of you reading this right now, it could be possible that you haven’t seen pinhole glasses before or you’ve seen them once or twice and either don’t know what they are for, or doubt that they work as advertised. Today, we try to shed more light into these mysterious eyeglass frames that promise better vision minus the lenses.

Stenopeic glasses are known for being a full frame of glasses but instead of lenses, it’s a piece of plastic or silicon but with small sequential holes in them. How they are supposed to function is that, because of having plenty of small holes, you can peek through them to help focus your vision.

So do the eye glasses frames work? They actually do. Because of how they limit the light that goes into the eyes, they lessen what doctors call as the “blur circle” or the blurred part of your peripheral vision. This is helpful for people with near-sightedness (myopia), far sightedness (hyperopia), and to some extent astigmatism.

If they work as advertised, are they advisable to use? Not exactly. As described, they are solidly opaque pieces of eyewear that are riddled with holes. Also, they correct and focus vision by removing peripheral blurring—this means that it removes your peripheral vision so your eyes are only focused on single light points. What you gain in focus, you lose in periphery making the pinhole eye glass frame a less than viable option for everyday eyewear.

Some doctors however use pinhole eyeglasses as a diagnostic tool to differentiate if a patient’s visual impairment is because of an infection or otherwise non-pathological causes.

Instead of using pinhole glasses to correct myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism, it’s still best to use regular prescription glasses. Although they do work in helping the eye focus, the price of having an obstructed peripheral vision might even make them accident prone for everyday use.
